Endings and Beginnings - A poem by Brian Mendonca

Endings and Beginnings

Fog over the riverways.
A brash new cell phone tower
looms on the terrace next door.
A koita* hacks away at a coconut tree
Tarvotti* gathers his produce.
A bluefinch perches on the gulmohar tree
Two crows neck nearby.
A siren in the distance
The roar of an aircraft shatters daybreak.
The beginning of the week
The end of the year.

koita: (konkani) axe
Tarvotti: Goan shippie
