"Tarv", "Tarvotti", "Agbot", "Tarum"......

Elsewhere I had written earlier but forgot to sign. Hence this repetition. The
Konkani word for ship/boat is "tarum" and the plural form is "tarvam". >From
this I gather the one who works on ships is called a "tarvotti".

Selma Carvalho:
So if possible, what is the word "tarv", is a Portugeuse word absorbed by our
language, or does it have a Konkani origin. Any help appreciated.

___________

Agbot is a Konkani word for a ship that sails in shallow waters eg. Goa to
Bombay, Kerala etc.
Tarvot is a Konkani word for a Liner that sails accross the Oceans.

'Ag' is fire; hence, 'agbot' was the degeneration for 'steam ship'.
It was not limited to small or large ships but all those powered by steam.

Accepted, but you have not given an alternative explaination to the problem.
Selma is trying to get information for the research she is doing in writing her
book. As for me?
I am doing research in trying to get my PHD from Goanet so that I can type Dr.
before my name for Goanet mail.
I have realised all the BJP Porrikar supporters on Goanet are Doctors, I would
like to be one of them too and then distribute coconuts and fish in the Panjim
market at cost price with Porrikar breathing down my neck, how about that, Now:
How about this:
Tar is a Canoe that we cross the river accross Aldona to Khorjuem etc.
Tarvm or Tarum, - U was not introduced into the
Roman/Latin/Portuguese vocabulary till much later on, 18the century.
Tarvm is a boat 'with sails', that we (I) sailed from Aldona to Panjim.
Tha same Tarvm (but bigger) with sails that sailed accros the Ocean is also
Tarum.
You cannot call the Tarvm or Tarum person TARYO.
Taryo is already taken up by the local chap who owns the TAR contract.
Therefore TARVOTI is the promotion for the person who works on Tarvm.

As far as my knowledge goes the Konkani word for ship is "tarum" which in
plural form is "tarvam". Hence a person working on ships is called a "tarvotti".
